Each of these proteins contains two bromodomains, a conserved sequence motif which may be involved in chromatin targeting. This gene has been implicated as the chromosome 19 target of translocation t(15,19)(q13,p13.1), which defines an upper respiratory tract carcinoma in young people. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.

Myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (MBS) is a subunit of myosin phosphatase, which regulates the actin-myosin interaction downstream of the GTPase Rho. RhoA, in its active GTP-bound form, interacts with MBS to control myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation, affecting smooth muscle contraction and nonmuscle cell function. RhoA activates Rho-kinase, which phosphorylates MBS and inactivates myosin phosphatase. Overexpression or activation of RhoA increases MBS and MLC phosphorylation. This pathway regulates the balance of actin and myosin interaction. Several isoforms of this gene have been identified due to alternative splicing.

In addition, it has been shown to be significantly overexpressed in several human tumors. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.

The protein positively regulates the downstream effector ribosomal protein S6 kinase, and negatively regulates the mTOR kinase. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
